Back by popular demand are swim lessons, taking place throughout the summer. The swim lesson program is designed for youth and adults of all skill levels. New Swim Courses Beginning Jr. Lifeguard, swim clinics and water safety courses are being offered in July at the pool. Junior Lifeguard: Course takes place July 13-15, July 19-21 and Aug. 2-4 with time slots for ages 9 to 11 and 12 and older (must be very strong swimmers). The class is taught by certified Red Cross lifeguards from the Rec Cross "Guard Start" material. All the basic essentials are taught to help prepare the student for a future as a lifeguard, including water safety, pool entries for emergency and rescue techniques. Cost is $27 per child. Dates are as follows: July 13-15 * 9- to 11-year-olds -- 2:00-3:30 p.m. * 12+ -year-olds -- 4:00-5:30 p.m. July 19-21 * 9- to 11-year-olds -- 2:00-3:30 p.m. * 12+ -year-olds -- 4:00-5:30 p.m. Aug. 2-4 * 9- to 11-year-olds -- 2:00-3:30 p.m. * 12+ -year-olds -- 4:00-5:30 p.m. Swim Clinics: For swimmers who are beyond swim lessons but want to improve their techniques on front crawl, breast stroke and brief instruction on underwater breast stroke and butterfly. Each 45-minute time slot is $10 per student and is taught by a Water Safety Instruction-certified lifeguard. Times and dates are as follows: * July 14, 16 and 21 -- 11:30 a.m. * July 24 -- 10:00 a.m. * July 29 -- 4:00 p.m. * July 31 -- 10 a.m. * Aug. 5 -- 2:30 p.m. Water Safety Course: Perfect for the future Junior Lifeguard. The class is for all ages to teach the importance of practicing safety as well as how to enforce it in and around the water. Participants will learn how to get out of a dangerous situation, why safe practices are necessary at the pool and what it means to enforce safe water habits with peers. The cost is $20 for the three-day course.Dates are as follows: * July 27-29 -- 2:30-3:30 p.m. * Aug. 9-11 -- 2:30-3:30 p.m Call or visit the Business Office to sign up for any of these courses.
Swim levels for ongoing swim lessons are as follows: Level One: Minnows – Beginner swimmers designed for those with little or no experience in the water. Students will be introduced to water and water safety, but will also be shown and taught the basic fundamental skills for swimming. Level Two: Polliwogs – Intermediate swimmers who must be able to submerge their face in water, bob, blow bubbles, be able to walk through the water by themselves and who can demonstrate skills of Level One. Level Three: Dolphins – Advanced Swimmers who must master the skills of Level One and Level Two. Students will be taught how to coordinate the front and back crawl, and be introduced to backstroke, treading, rotary breathing, breaststroke, etc. Classes are taught weekly through at least Aug. 6, with Level One from 10 to 10:30 a.m., Level Two from 10:30 to 11 a.m. and Level Three from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Semi-private lessons are available by appointment, and classes will be subject to change based upon adequate sign-ups. The cost is $30 per session, with no refunds issued two weeks prior to the start of each session. All teachers are Water Safety Instructor Certified.
